The Mercedes Benz The Car Killer!

2003-2006 Mercedes Benz SL500 R230 Broken Hydraulic Line Repair/Replacement.

DIY Guide: Replace Hydraulic Line on Your 2003-2006 SL500

If you own a 2003-2006 SL500, you might have heard about the dreaded hydraulic line failure, often dubbed the "car killer" due to the hefty dealer repair cost. It's super expensive because the dealer has to remove the ENTIRE engine just to change out a small hydraulic line and the value of the vehicle is often times less than the cost of the repair.. (we've seen quoted) up to $5,500!

Fear not though DIYers! BenzTech Modules is here to save the day. We have developed a work around (or a life hack) that can save your car from the scrap heap for few hundred bucks!

Below, we're going to guide you through replacing it without the need to remove the motor.

Let's get started.

Tools and Materials:

  • Jack and jack stands

  • Wrenches and pliers

  • Hose cutter

  • Custom hose with connector

  • Coupler

  • Zip ties or metal straps

  • Safety gear

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Locate the Faulty Hydraulic Line:

Identify the hydraulic line that has failed. It's often the one with the rubber part that's prone to bursting.

Assess the Situation:

Instead of removing the entire line, we'll cut and replace the damaged section. This eliminates the need to take out the motor.

Prepare for Cutting:

Leave the original line in place and cut it strategically, about where the damage is. Ensure you have enough room to work.

Find a Hose Shop:

Look for a local hose shop, preferably one experienced with automotive hoses. They can craft a custom hose with the necessary connector.

Get Your Custom Hose:

Present the damaged section to the hose shop, and they'll create a flexible hose with the right specifications.

Introduce the Coupler:

Acquire a coupler to join the original line and the custom hose. This ensures a secure connection between the two pieces.

Coupling the Pieces:

Attach the coupler to both ends, effectively joining the original line and the newly crafted hose.

Check the Fit:

Ensure the connection is secure and fits snugly. This step is crucial for preventing leaks.

Installation:

Maneuver the hose through the designated route, ensuring it avoids contact with the catalytic converter. Use zip ties or metal straps to secure it in place.

Future Preparedness:

Learn from the experience. In case of a future failure, cut the line at the specified location and repeat the process. Consider creating a kit for easier DIY fixes.

Bonus Tip - DIY Kit:

I've put together a kit for this specific task, which will be available on our site here. It includes all the essentials to make your life easier during the replacement process. Expect the installation to take no more than an hour.

With this DIY guide, you can tackle the notorious SL500 hydraulic line issue with confidence.

Happy fixing!
