What is the Mercedes Electronic Steering Lock, and why does it need programming?

The Electronic Steering Lock (ESL), also called ELV, is part of the vehicle's drive authorization system. The Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS/EZS), key and ESL must have matching security data. Replacing the ESL with an emulator or another factory lock requires the appropriate programming.

What are the symptoms of Mercedes electronic steering lock failure?

Possible symptoms include no crank or no start, missing normal ignition-on dash lights, a steering wheel that does not unlock when the key is inserted, or a factory lock that stays unlocked when the key is removed.

These symptoms suggest a starting-system problem but do not prove an ESL failure. Battery, key, EIS and wiring faults can cause similar symptoms. Check the EIS/EZS fault information with a suitable diagnostic tool and confirm the cause before ordering. Watch our Mercedes ESL diagnostic video and browse the ESL diagnosis and removal videos.

Will an ESL emulator fix every Mercedes no-start problem?

No. A programmed emulator addresses the electronic steering-lock function on a supported application. It will not repair an unrelated battery, key, ignition-switch, wiring or engine-management fault. If you are unsure whether the problem is the ESL or EIS, read our EIS FAQ or call or text (818) 510-3375.

What is the difference between a factory ESL and an emulator?

The factory ESL includes a mechanical locking mechanism. The emulator supplies the appropriate electronic steering-lock response without operating that mechanism. Once an emulator is installed, the steering column will not mechanically lock after you remove the key. Our programmed emulators carry a lifetime warranty.

If you want to retain the mechanical steering lock, review our remanufactured and programmed factory ESL service.

Can I use this service for a C250, C300, C350 or GLK350?

The service covers applicable W204 C-Class models, including C250, C300 and C350, and X204 GLK applications including GLK350. Applicable C207 E-Class Coupe and A207 E-Class Cabriolet applications are also covered. The product page also lists applicable C63 AMG and R172 SLK250 applications. Model name alone is not a fitment guarantee; contact us with your year, model and EIS details if you need confirmation.

Can I program an emulator or factory lock myself?

Programming requires specialized equipment and the knowledge to use it. Our programmed ESL emulator service includes the emulator and programming. An unprogrammed emulator is a different product and is not ready to install without that work.

What do I need to send for ESL emulator programming?

Send your Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS), one key fob and your order number. We do not need the factory ESL. If you have two keys, send only one; both will continue to work. If you order a spare key with a copied emergency metal key, include the original emergency key too.

How do I order and ship my parts?

Purchase the Mercedes steering lock emulator with programming, choose your options and shipping, and follow the instructions provided with your order. Look for the prepaid UPS label in your email and check your spam folder. We serve customers nationwide from Whittier, California.

What happens after you receive my EIS and key?

We check that your EIS and key are functioning, program the emulator, and return the emulator with your EIS and key ready for plug-and-play installation. If we find an EIS or key problem, we contact you about the next step.

How long does ESL emulator programming take?

Eligible packages are normally programmed and returned the same day they arrive. Packages arriving after 4 p.m. Pacific time ship the following business day. EIS or key faults may require follow-up. Shipping transit time is separate; choose from the shipping services available at checkout.

Does the emulator unlock a steering column that is already stuck?

No. Programming does not physically release a factory lock stuck in the locked position. The mechanical lock must be dealt with during installation. Review the ESL removal videos and get installation help if needed.

Wife’s C300 stranded her in the Costco gas station, the car suddenly failed to start! After much testing & trouble shooting I fortunately found this place!!! The ESL failed and Michael absolutely has the fix. Not only with the video’s but when you call, you get a call back! I took out the Ignition and sent it and the key and just as promised, I got them and the Emulator back, put it all in and it’s never going to happen to her again! I only gave it 5 Stars because I couldn’t do 6!

There has only been a few times I received service as excellent as this. I was able to identify the issue I was having with my Mercedes from his YouTube step by step instructions. Once I contacted him the response was immediate and informative. I mailed the part from P.A. to C.A. on Sunday and received back on Wednesday morning. As soon as I plugged it in and turned the key my car started. Through Micheals instructions he was able to help me from making a simple mistake of my steering column locking up and that would have cost thousands. Its a fantastic and great service and I am so appreciative. This was a E S L reprogram on a 2008 Mercedes C3000

This is a great shop. Run by actual people. Many sites do not list a physical address or give you any confidence that you are going to get a solution to your aging Mercedes. All problems fixed and helped through the process. Thanks MBS!

I have a 2010 ML350 that was having an intermittent starting issue. I took out the EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch) and sent it to them. I know that these issues can be expensive but they did it for a much better reasonable price. They tried a basic fix but the unit was too broken. Once I received the cloned replacement, the engine started right up but I got an anti theft lockout on the radio. I messaged them and they told me it was an issue that happens on some ML's. They paid for shipping and I quickly sent it back out. The same day they received it, a new replacement was shipped out. Within the week, I received the replacement. Just installed it and now the car is starting with no more anti theft warnings and the electronic trunk hatch is working once again! (It was not operating when the EIS was out). Was so satisfying to get it working for such a reasonable price. These guys are blessed with talent and were able to do wonders for my 2010 ML!

The service that Michael provides is so valuable. I was quoted 3500 to fix my EI/ESL and was able to fix it myself with Michaels instructions and parts for around 900 including shipping. It only took a few days to get the parts back! My Mercedes would still be sitting if this service want available. Thank you Michael!
