Mercedes EIS / EZS Cloning FAQ
Questions about Mercedes Electronic Ignition Switch cloning, compatible applications, missing keys and our nationwide mail-in bench service.

What is the EIS, and why does a replacement need programming?
The Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS), also called EZS, is part of the Mercedes Drive Authorization System. It holds security data used with the vehicle's keys and other modules. A replacement must be matched to the vehicle; a used unit is not ready to install just because its connectors fit.
What is Mercedes EIS cloning?
Cloning transfers the data from the original EIS to a compatible replacement EIS. We read the supported original module on the bench and write its data to the replacement. See the EIS cloning service page for the current service options and application guidance.
Does a key that will not turn mean the EIS has failed?
Not necessarily. Key recognition problems, intermittent starting and a no-crank/no-start condition call for diagnosis. The key, battery, wiring, EIS and ESL can cause similar symptoms. Confirm the cause before ordering a cloning service.
Which years and chassis does this service cover?
Our main service covers supported applications generally from 1998–2014. Chassis and year alone are not enough to confirm fitment: the EIS type, part number and security system matter. Check the EIS compatibility section and the separate C215/W220/R230 and C216 service links before ordering.
Can Benz Tech Modules clone an FBS4 EIS?
No. FBS4 EIS cloning and FBS4 key programming are not offered through this service. Some Mercedes applications transitioned before 2015, so a 2012–2014 model is not automatically eligible. Contact us with the EIS part number and vehicle details if you are unsure.
What do I need to mail in?
For standard cloning, send your original EIS and a key if you have one, along with your order number. We supply the replacement EIS; you do not need to mail in a donor unit. Confirm compatibility and use the shipping instructions provided with your order. See how our mail-in EIS service works.
Is the replacement EIS included in the price?
Yes. The main $500 EIS cloning service includes the replacement ignition switch and cloning. Applicable Keyless GO or recovery options, optional spare keys, shipping and tax are additional as shown at checkout. Separate chassis-specific service pages have their own pricing and options.
Can you clone my EIS if I have no key?
A missing key does not automatically prevent cloning if the original EIS is available. Tell us before ordering so we can confirm the key option and parts required for your application.
What if my EIS is lost, stolen or too damaged to read?
Contact us about using the original ECM and instrument cluster for a supported recovery case. New keys are required when the original EIS key-password data cannot be recovered. This differs from a normal clone of a readable original EIS; confirm feasibility and the required options before shipping.
Do I need a Keyless GO option?
If the vehicle has Keyless GO (Code 889), the service page requires the matching Keyless GO option. A spare key and the Keyless GO service option are different selections. Contact us if your EIS type is not clear.
Do you need the entire vehicle?
No. This is a bench service for removed components. You can mail in the parts from anywhere in the United States. Arrange removal and installation locally and follow your order instructions.
How long does EIS cloning take?
We can clone a supported EIS and send it back the same day we receive it. Contact us about timing for a recovery case or uncertain application. Shipping transit time is additional.
What warranty comes with the cloned EIS?
The cloned EIS and keys supplied with the service, when applicable, have a two-year warranty. Optional shipping insurance is available; review the shipping insurance terms before selecting it.
How is EIS cloning different from an ESL emulator?
EIS cloning replaces the ignition switch's data in a compatible unit. An ESL emulator replaces the electronic function of a supported steering lock. If diagnosis confirms an ESL fault, use the ESL emulator programming service, ESL FAQ and ESL videos. The correct service depends on the diagnosed fault.
