Mercedes ECM / ECU cloning FAQ
Use this guide to choose a mail-in engine computer service and understand donor requirements. Compare ECM cloning services or go to ME9.7 cloning for M272 V6 and M273 V8 engines.
What is an ECM or ECU?
The engine control module manages engine functions such as fuel injection and ignition. ECM and ECU are commonly used names for the engine computer. Its programming and vehicle authorization data must be considered when installing a replacement.
What does ECM cloning do?
Cloning transfers the supported data from an original engine computer to a compatible replacement. It is a replacement-module service, not a promise of extra horsepower, improved fuel economy or a repair for every no-start.
How do I choose the right service?
Identify the controller family and full part numbers on the original module. Compare them with the product listing and confirm the donor's compatibility before buying it. A similar Mercedes model, case or connector is not sufficient. Our ECM service guide links the ME9.7, ME2.8, MED17.7.X, ME2.0 / ME2.1 and SIM271 listings.
Is a replacement ECM included?
It depends on the service. The ME9.7 base service has separate used M272 V6 and M273 V8 donor options. The MED17.7.X and C250 / SLK250 SIM271 listings state that a used donor is included. ME2.8 offers an optional donor. Check the exact product and selected options before checkout.
What if my original ME9.7 ECM is unreadable?
The ME9.7 service offers programming using your original Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) instead, for an additional $50. Select the EIS-based option and confirm the application and what to send before shipping. Do not assume that this alternative applies to every ECM family.
What if my original ECM is missing or stolen?
Contact us before ordering. Standard cloning depends on an available source of the required data. Replacement programming options depend on the module family and the original vehicle modules available; a missing ECM is not automatically a standard clone job.
Can you clone an FBS4 ECM?
We offer FBS4 ECM cloning for supported applications. Confirm your exact controller and part numbers with us before ordering. ECM support is separate from the EIS and ESL services; it does not mean every FBS4 module can be cloned.
What should I mail in?
Follow the selected product and order instructions. Typically this means the original ECM plus a compatible donor if you are providing one. For the ME9.7 EIS-based option, confirm the original EIS and any donor requirements with us. Pack the modules securely and use the mailing instructions for your particular service.
How long does ECM programming take?
The bench programming process usually takes 30 minutes to four hours depending on the application. That is not a total mail-in turnaround guarantee: scheduling, module condition and shipping time are separate. Ask us about timing for your specific job.
Does a no-start, check-engine light or high-running fan prove the ECM is bad?
No. These symptoms can have several causes. Confirm the diagnosis before purchasing a replacement-module service. Watch the ECM diagnostic video. If the diagnosis points to a different component, see the EIS cloning service or ESL emulator service.
How do I get help choosing a donor or with a completed job?
Call/text (818) 510-3375 or contact Benz Tech Modules. Have the vehicle details, module-label information and your order number if applicable ready.
